ORGATEC 2026 Wrap-Up: What Contract Buyers Carry into 2027

What ORGATEC 2026 Actually Delivered

ORGATEC closed in Cologne on 30 October after four days. Koelnmesse’s final report records 550 exhibitors from 39 countries and more than 40,000 trade visitors from 116 countries, with the contract side of the show concentrated in Hall 10.2. The theme — “From rooms to relationships: designing spaces in an ever-changing world” — reads like conference language until you look at what was actually specified on the stands: seating built for a decade of use, layouts that change weekly, and material records that can be handed to a client.

For a buyer placing hotel, restaurant or café orders in the next two quarters, four signals from this edition are worth carrying into 2027 planning.

Signal One: Contract and Workplace Have Merged

ORGATEC’s core audience is the workspace, yet Hall 10.2 was dedicated to contract furnishing for hotels, hospitality venues, congress centres, lobbies and lounges. The two worlds now ask the same questions. A hotel lobby is a workspace at nine in the morning and a bar at nine at night; a conference venue seats delegates in rows before lunch and at round tables after.

In practice, the durability language of office furniture — tested cycles, declared foam density, stated frame gauge — is now expected of hospitality seating too. If a quotation for dining chairs gives you a fabric name but no Martindale figure, no foam density and no frame wall thickness, it is behind the specification standard this show put on display.

Signal Two: The Room Is a Set of Configurations, Not a Layout

The theme’s “rooms to relationships” line translated on the floor into rooms that rearrange: stackable, nestable, linkable, on castors, with screens and trolleys treated as part of the system rather than as accessories.

For banquet and multi-purpose venues this is the most practical takeaway. A ballroom that hosts a 300-seat dinner on Friday and a 120-seat breakout on Monday does not need two chair inventories; it needs one chair that stacks to a tested height, a trolley sized to the service lift, and a storage plan measured in square metres. We set out that arithmetic in our stacking and storage calculation guide.

Signal Three: Material Passports Left the Slide Deck

Repair and traceability were recurring themes in the contract halls, and for once the legal groundwork exists. The EU Digital Product Passport Registry opened on 20 July 2026 under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778, adopted on 16 July and published in the Official Journal the following day. Batteries face the first deadline on 18 February 2027; the first ESPR product groups — iron and steel, then textiles, tyres and aluminium — follow from 2028, at least 18 months after their delegated acts are adopted.

Furniture sits on the registry’s roadmap rather than at its head, which is exactly why the preparation window is useful. The factories that will cope are the ones that can already answer two questions: can you trace this unit back to a production batch, and can you declare the material composition of every component? Our upholstery compliance guide sets out what to ask for now.

Signal Four: Repair Beats Replacement

Interchangeable covers, replaceable glides, frames that can be re-welded and re-coated — the contract floor treated serviceability as a design feature rather than an afterthought. The commercial logic is simple: a 200-cover restaurant that replaces 15% of its seating every year buys twice as often as one that re-covers the same frames.

Ask suppliers for three things: whether covers are removable and available as spares, whether glides and feet are stocked parts, and what the re-order lead time is for a single replacement chair three years after the original order. A factory that cannot answer the third question is selling you a one-off, not a programme.

What This Changes in a 2027 Specification

  • Tested stack count and column height in writing, not “stackable” alone
  • Foam density by layer, not “high-density foam”
  • Martindale cycles for the actual cover specified, plus a spare-cover allowance
  • Frame wall thickness and coating system, including pre-treatment
  • Removable covers and stocked glides
  • Batch traceability and a component-level material list
  • Trolley capacity and dimensions matched to your lift and doorways

Timing an Order Around the 2027 Calendar

The show’s dates matter less than the calendar that follows them. Hotel projects specified in the fourth quarter typically need samples in January, production in February and delivery before the spring season. Chinese New Year falls in early February 2027, which removes two to three weeks of factory capacity from the schedule and tightens container space on Europe-bound lanes.

Work backwards: 30 to 45 days of production, three to five weeks of sea freight to a European port, plus customs and inland delivery. An order that must be installed in April should be confirmed before mid-December 2026, with fabric and frame colour approved in the same window. Anything confirmed in January is realistically a May or June installation.

Next Edition

ORGATEC returns to Cologne from 10 to 13 October 2028, marking the fair’s 75th anniversary. Buyers who specify contract seating should treat 2027 as the preparation year for what will be standard by then: declared material data, serviceable components, and seating specified as a system rather than as a chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What were the main themes at ORGATEC 2026?

The programme centred on spaces designed for changing use — flexible, reconfigurable contract environments — alongside repairability and material transparency. On the contract side, seating was presented with declared durability data rather than appearance alone.

Does the EU Digital Product Passport apply to furniture in 2027?

Not yet. The first DPP deadline is 18 February 2027 for certain types of large batteries. The first ESPR product groups — iron and steel, then textiles, tyres and aluminium — apply from 2028. Furniture is expected to follow through a delegated act, so the current window is for building batch traceability.

When is the next ORGATEC?

10–13 October 2028 in Cologne, the fair’s 75th edition.

Final Thought

Trade fairs are useful for what they make unavoidable. This edition made one thing clear: contract buyers are no longer comparing chairs on price and appearance, but on declared performance and the ability to service what they buy. Our banquet chairs and commercial dining chairs are built on our own welding, powder coating and upholstery lines, and every offer states stack count, foam density and packed volume. Send us your room plan and seat count and we will put the numbers in writing.
